The Good Doctor’s future beyond season 4 revealed

DIGITALSPY.COM: The Good Doctor will officially return for season five.

Freddie Highmore’s medical drama – which is network ABC’s third most popular title in terms of viewing figures, behind only Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 – was confirmed to be returning in a post on social media.

The show’s official account wrote: “We can’t wait for what’s to come when #TheGoodDoctor returns for another season!”

Its fourth season is still currently airing.

Meanwhile, The Good Doctor producer Daniel Dae Kim revealed last month that the initial plan was for an Asian actor to lead the series, but it went in a different direction when a showrunner was brought onboard.

“I wanted an Asian lead,” he explained. “The first time we developed it, it was with an Asian lead. And the second time, when [David] Shore came aboard, we had a conversation about it.

“When you start working with a showrunner, it has to be a proper meeting of the minds because he’s the one that’ll be running the show every day. And so he had to have a level of comfort with it.

“I’m not going to say he was the one that wanted a white lead, but I will say that it became less clear to him how an Asian lead would work. And then the studio came in with Freddie Highmore, whom we both absolutely loved. And so it shifted the focus to creating a diverse ensemble.”
